Weschler Pages 1-9

Initially, the fact that a massive stink ant can emanate a cry perceptible to the human ear and survives by searching for food on bed of an extravagant rainforest can be perceived as a metaphor. Of course it can be taken literally as well.  Nonetheless, the ant seems more like one in need such as a homeless person, or a lost dog.  Or in other words, the ant can even be relative to someone who is lost in his or her mind, rather than physically being detached.
Secondly, the text seems more fantastical. Where a lonely ant becomes possessed and conduces an abnormal disposition but yet it is still able to transcend or climb upward.  This does happen, but it may seem like a hopeful ideal of invincibility that a person might have.

The description of Geoffrey Sonnabend’s state just makes the fungus seem like a drug.  However, to only remember music might mean that we humans remember what we want, or one might remember an aspect that is second nature to him or her.  As if our hearts have a stronger sense of memory than our minds.  ‘We, amnesiacs all, condemned to live in an eternally fleeting present’’.  This statement might be true.  After all in this contemporary digital age we photograph everything.  I wonder if ‘eternally frozen in a mass of lead’ is relative to memory.  Well Madalena Delani, her memory and the ant died so maybe this opening text is more about immortality of any existence.
