It is very unfortunate to hear
about the historic city of Delhi going to ruins. The author is a great primary
source because he has seen everything first hand. Dalrymple recalls villages
that existed in Delhi and how they are being taken over by the government. This
failure of preservation of land and people happens in so many other places of
the world. Specifically, markets and streets replaced the free land that once
existed there, and this can see as urbanization. In a way, this could be
considered the city becoming more modern and “upgraded.” Also, he speaks of the
crime, murder and rape, that is increasing. It is clearly mentioned that women
are not given the most respect because of the patriarchal society which isn't a
big surprise because many traditional customs are still being practiced in
countries in that area.
