What William Dalrymple reflects about Delhi is true for a lot of places around the globe. As populations rise, buildings upon buildings are erected. We are slowly losing all of the pure land we have left. Take Chicago for example; we have a set of roads built on top of another set of roads. This is a bit unsettling but cities have become a culture within a culture. Cities are beautiful and although in Delhi they are becoming dramatically larger each passing day, it is the India we think of today and that is why we are most curious in its culture.
But I do agree with Dalrymple for the majority of what he says. I too believe that we are being swallowed up by ourself with overpopulation and urbanization. Perhaps if Delhi or anywhere else in India could declare a few more national parks, not just for wildlife and beauty preservation, but for the sake of keeping untouched land forever untouched.
