Redfield pgs. 24-34 Response

Peasant societies, though very numerous, can be defined in various ways, depending on what scope you are looking through. This author omits fishers, hunters, gatherers, and pastoral groups as well as what he calls farmers. The groups that he places in the peasant category don’t all fall into the same category, which he goes on to say is indicative of culture. Anthropologists aren’t looking to define certain groups, but rather a general, all-encompassing group the generally defines all of them. Each group has their own variations, their own gradations between peasants, towns-people, frontiersmen, and rural indigenous groups. These groups don’t fall into the average, but as a whole they can be used to define man and civilization.
