Robert Redfield remains quite impartial in his thesis. He explicitly states that peasantry will be
lightly defined as a kind rather than a strict rule of people. The writer allows the reader to determine his
or her own stance or perspective of the matter.
Through primary research the writer explores peasants as economists
and/or farmers. His secondary research
refers to Eric Wolf’s concept that peasants are ‘agricultural producers’. Redfield leans more towards Kroeber’s
definition that peasants are rural, but he wishes to remain impartial. His thesis states that feudalism would not be
discussed as much as peasants as independent farmers.
