This section of the Redfield reading deals with the idea of
peasantry, and dabbles in different definitions of the word before coming to
solidify his own ideas on the term. Redfield revolves peasantry around
agriculture, used not for business or profit, but for survival. Peasants are
linked to a rural setting. Redfield presents new insight to this often over
used and misunderstood terminology. He shows how peasants can vary culturally
but how they all have similar qualities. The reading continued to be heavily
factual, but these are the ideas I ultimately got out of Redfield’s writing.
