Delhi Reading

Dalrymple lives in Delhi, the place that he is writing about. His beliefs about the culture in and around Delhi were a bit confusingly presented. He opens with a bit about a girl who was raped and killed on her way home from the movies, and then talks about the villages Shahpur Jat and Khirki, and how they have been completely taken over by the expansion of Delhi, because it is so massive. What doesn't make sense to me is that he tells us that these little villages are the reasons why he loves the area. He obviously very much enjoys the culture, but then he goes on to talk about why he likes it, and how these villages are being taken over and made into commercial areas, but he merely comments on it and moves on. The same goes for the rape and murder victim at the beginning. To me, it sounds as if he loves the culture of the physical area, but it doesn't sound like he has had much of a difficult time himself. I do not know anything about this culture, but were I writing something about this struggling area, I would make sure to choose one piece of the culture to center in on. He gives an overview that comes off as rather vague.
