This section goes over the drama
discussed at the beginning of the book about Fatima setting herself on fire.
Abdul and his family, recently with their father out of the hospital, had a new
lease on life with the daughter returning home from a cheating husband. Now
they decided to renovate their house with a small window for ventilation and
new floors with their surplus of cash. This section also covers Manju in her
struggles with her mom and with her busy life.
The whole of this part of the story
is really just giving more detail to the characters/people of this story in
order to give reasons to their actions and feelings. I think this part was put
in by the author to develop more than just Abdul and his family so that his
story isn’t just the only important story. The struggles of life aren’t there
to make is pity the characters and make them feel bad but to just provide
motivation. My initial response was simply intrigue based on each characters
response to all the drama happening, including Abdul being a mediator between
Fatima and his mother, as well as Abdul’s father’s new lease on life as he is
released from the hospital looking much younger and healthier. The life of the slum is both a microcosm of society and its own unique place, depending on what details you focus on: love, loss, depression, and hope.
