How knowledgeable Boo is about this
culture unbelievable even knowing that she has lived with them. It is a wonder
how she is able to have these characters portray different groupings in this
society. Her research had to have taken years to gather and the interaction
with these people. I consider the way she is able to write about Sunil and the
other scavengers’ point of view is equivalent to me writing about a homeless
man on the street. It goes beyond watching the person’s every movement and
behavior. In relation to primary research, this had to have required much
communication with true scavengers and their mindsets and what runs through
their heads as they try to survive in this world. Also, Boo has referenced
different riots and rivals throughout this section which reveals the history
that she had to learn in order to have readers understand the background of Sunil;
how he has become the person he is in the place of Annawadi, and how everyone
else views him. An interesting moment is when Sunil is confused of Will Smith’s
final actions in I Am Legend. I
couldn’t help but wonder what everyone at the movie theater thought about the dystopia
in comparison to the place they live.
