In the following events after Fatima’s false statement to the government, the Husain family is blamed for forcing her to set herself on fire, and sent to jail. The reason Fatima changed her statement to the government is because in India, someone can get in a lot of trouble for attempted suicide. How Fatima changed her statement is beside me. How did she get so much power? Did the government worker just feel bad for her? Is everything corrupt in India? I wonder how much is not corrupt. We hear about the poor hospital treatment that Fatima received, and then this half-assed justice system. We already know about the corruptness of social status and the case system. So what is right in Annawadi?
The Husain family seems to be sticking with their morals and this gives the reader a glimpse of sanity. They are aware of the corruption and know that if they want to get out of jail, they will have to pay someone off. There is a sense of doom lingering in this section of Behind the Beautiful Forevers. I am questioning Boo's motive to write and publish such a depressing book. Mostly, It just makes me uncomfortable. Thinking about the hopelessness and how it seems like a black hole. I don’t see this book turning positive anytime soon. If this were a novel, we would be close to the climax where a resolution will follow. But this is not a novel, it is someone of a documentary, and they don’t always have happy endings.
